Background

This project seeks to strengthen the capacity of Tonikoko Farmers Union (TFU) to concurrently develop sustainable and integrated cocoa production systems and address child labour concerns. These objectives will be achieved, through a series of activities aimed at strengthening Tonikoko Farmers Union (TFU), developing trade and market information systems, providing technical packages, and redressing labour issues especially the worst forms of child labour.

The expected pilot project outcomes are a set of interventions, implemented by Tonikoko Farmers Union (TFU) and partners which will increase the supply of good quality Nigerian cocoa to the world market, promote profitable, environmentally sound and socially responsible production system that improves labour practices and the circumstances of children in the selected communities.

The vision of the Nigeria Network-STCP is to facilitate the establishment of a farmer-owned model (FOM) that would re-create a system of structured trade financing that combines a coherent quality assurance mechanism and information exchange that will return discipline and credibility to the marketing chain. At another level the farmer-owned model is expected to impact the gains of improved access to credit, farming practices, extension services and competitive prices on the overall development and efficiency of other tree crops and the socio-economic well-being in the host communities.

The farmer owned-model as conceptualized is expected to perform the following functions:
  • Offer structures for selling direct to more important and orderly markets at higher prices for members' produce.
  • Provide training, technical assistance and other inputs to members and fora for farmers to meet, exchange ideas and share information
  • Ensure the delivery of training and extension services in a structured, coherent and cost-effective manner.
  • Enhance access to finance through the banks, other agencies or their own credit scheme.
  • Motivate farmers, whose incomes can be increased if the organization is successful.
  • Institutionalize quality assurance system.
  • Promote sustainable farming systems and practices.
