The production of cacao is the basis of the economic and social prosperity of Ivory Coast. The farmers who are engaged in this activity have very little means when faced with the difficulties such as replacing their old (cacao) trees or when confronted with pests and diseases. The disengagement of the Government from the production activities and followed by the total liberalization of the cacao sector, has led to difficulties and disadvantages for the producers faced with the volatile market.
The activies realized in 2000 / 2001 has been directed to :
- to put in place an information system destined for the administration personnel and members of the two cooperatives : "SCAGBO" (in Agboville) and "ALLEH - AHUN" (in Alépé) ;
- improvement of administrative control of the caco quality in the above cited coop's;
- the micro propagation of cacao (in vitro culture in of cacao- tissue culture), research on biological control against black pod disease and
- regional survey on cashew nut crop.
Due to the difficulties faced by the cacao farmers and having seen the results of the preliminary activities on the ground, the pilot projects will assure the education of the farmers in the cooperatives and diversify their activities and improve the production and quality of their products while preserving the environment. The ultimate objective is to improve the income and the socio-economic conditions of the " small farmers " numbering around 500,000. |
