Background
This programme unquestionably offers Guinea the opportunity to value its great potential of cultivable lands favourable to high added value fruit cultivation, such us cashew nuts, coffee and cocoa. The goal of this pilot project, logical continuation of the initial test, is to evaluate during three years, the pertinence of STCP, in a larger domain of development of the cultivation of cashew nut, coffee and cocoa.
The cashew nut cultivation constitutes the primary activity of STCP in Guinea, because it covers three of the four natural regions of the country. A secondary interest was reserved for the improvement of the coffee sector, the present main source of revenues for the Guinean planters… Finally, cocoa constitutes a new activity to be developed, in contact with the leading world producers, such as Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana, whose experiences can be shared as a result of the synergies induced by STCP. To this end, three basins of production have been chosen to accommodate the pilot stage of the project:
- the basins of Boké and Mandiana, for cashew nut,
- and the basin of Macenta, for coffee and cocoa.
This page presents the project of the STCP-GUINEA network which hinges on four components:
- the re-enforcement of the basic community organizations;
- the prevention and the fight against child labour in the plantations;
- the commercialisation and the market information systems;
- the re-enforcement of the technical capacities of production.
The intervention zones
Three intervention zones have been defined for the implementation of the project:
- Boké zone
This basin of production is located at the North-West of Guinea. It covers the North of the district of Boffa, the district of Boké, and the South of the district of Gaoual. In Boké, cashew cultivation remains an informal activity highly emergent, which developed in contact with Guinea-Bissau, without previous study and organization. The growing annual production is 2,000 tons of cashew nuts. The zone has a cultivable potential of more than 520,000 ha. It is expected that the production will reach 16,140 tons, following the STCP pilot project.
- Mandiana zone
The basin of Mandiana extends from the Centre to the East of the country, and covers an area of 20,000 km². Like the Boké zone, Mandiana presently produces 2,000 to 3,000 tons of cashew nuts per year, despite the impressive cultivable potential of more than 1,700,000 ha. The production induced by the STCP pilot project is expected to reach about 14,280 tons.
